DNA – the ancient gene

In *Stargate*, the **Ancient gene** (also called the **ATA gene**, or *Ancient Technology Activation gene*) is a key element in unlocking and using Ancient technology. The Ancients, also known as the **Alterans** or **Lanteans**, built advanced tech that could only be operated by individuals with this specific gene.

Humans, as descendants of the Ancients, can occasionally inherit the ATA gene naturally. However, those who don’t have it can undergo gene therapy to artificially acquire the ability to use Ancient devices, such as Puddle Jumpers, drones, and even Atlantis’s control systems.

In *Stargate Atlantis*, Major John Sheppard is one of the most notable characters with the natural Ancient gene, which allows him to interact with and operate Ancient technology effortlessly. This gave the Atlantis team a major advantage in exploring and defending the city.
